The Ugly Truth About Bottled Water

My husband and I would always fight over which bottled water to buy.  His was Aquafina and mine was Deer Park Spring water.  I think most people buy bottled for convenience more than anything.  This is why for 8 years I carried the thought of one day I will have my Kangen water machine.  Getting the Kangen water machine was the best thing I have ever done for not only my family but also the earth in general.  I feel as though not am I only helping my family’s health but also saving the earth for a healthier generation as well as a healthier earth!

So what did we do with the plastic bottles?  They went in the trash.  We were contributing to the factor below which is sad to think!

Bottled Water Is Bad For The Environment

According to the National Geographic, “Bottled water is a drain on the environment: The U.S. public goes through about 50 billion water bottles a year, and most of those plastic containers are not recycled. Transporting the bottles and keeping them cold also burns fossil fuels, which give off greenhouse gases.” 1500 plastic bottles are consumed every second. Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times. And, it will take 1000 years for the plastic to degrade.

Eco-costs include manufacturing, trucking, shelving, and marketing. And meeting the annual U.S. demand for plastic bottles requires enough oil to keep 100,000 cars on the road for a year, says Janet Larsen of the Earth Policy Institute. Sure, the 70 million empty water bottles the U.S. produces per day can be recycled, but the sad truth is, about 86 percent of them end up in the trash. Hardly worth it, for what flows out of the tap and into a reusable glass for free.

It Can Pose Health Threats

And, by the way, about half of all bottled water is tap water that has been purified. Bottled water companies increasingly use BPA-free plastic, but laced into plastic bottles are other chemicals that can seep out if bottles are exposed to heat or sit around for a long time.

The plastic in bottled water often contains chemicals BPA and phthalates, which are proven to be hazardous to human health.

It’s Not Proven to Taste or Be Better For You Than Tap

truth about water.pngThe non-profit, non-partisan Environmental Working Group (EWG) says, “The government does not mandate that bottled water be any safer than tap water. In fact, the chemical pollution standards are nearly identical.” Historically, bottled waters have even been recalled for contamination with particulate matter, mold and bacteria.

Some bottled water is glorified tap water at 10,000 times the cost.

The label on your bottled water may depict a peaceful mountain stream, but that doesn’t mean the water inside is pure and pristine.

Only some bottled water comes from springs or groundwater sources. It turns out that approximately 25% of bottled water is sourced from … the tap. Sure, some companies filter or radiate the tap water with ultraviolet light before selling it to you at several thousand times the cost of municipal tap water. (Examples include Aquafina, Dasani, and many other brands.)

I recently noticed that marketers are tapping into the health kick of drinking alkaline water.  I bought a 9.5 Alkaline bottle just to test it!  See the results here .
